Born in London in 1953 to an engineer father, he is in fact – like Brown – Scottish and was educated at an independent school in Edinburgh. Darling came into politics from law, which he studied at Aberdeen University. But politics appears to be in his blood – his great uncle, Sir William Darling, was a Conservative MP for Edinburgh South.
